The event will be held over several days, from August 16 to August 23, 2019, in the heart of downtown Moncton and along Riverfront Park.

“I am very much looking forward to returning to my hometown to take on the artistic direction of this space which I consider a type of cultural playground to entertain and inspire people of all ages at the Congrès mondial acadien,” said Joseph Edgar. “I am very excited to accept this truly unique challenge.”

Known primarily as a singer-songwriter, Joseph Edgar is not new to the world of artistic direction. During the past twenty years, he has directed many events, including the 15 août des fous, the Frye Festival and most recently the Soirée Acadie Rock during the 2017 Francofolies de Montréal, an epic event drawing over 20,000 people.

Joseph Edgar will be assisted by coordinator Lauren Guitard.

The Extrême frontière space will serve as the Congrès mondial acadien 2019’s key meeting place. The purpose of the space is to present various forms of artistic expression on several different stages. It will also be a lively area where artisans, vendors and others will provide visitors with a festive experience.

“In this popular space, the Acadian culture will be called upon to go over and above to show the world a modern, dynamic and fully mature Acadie,” said Claudette Thériault, Chair of the Congrès mondial acadien 2019. “I want to thank Joseph Edgar for embarking on this adventure; I have no doubt that he will be up to the task.”

The title chosen for this component of the Congrès mondial acadien 2019 pays tribute to one of Acadie’s greatest poets, the late Gérald Leblanc. Published in 1988, L’extrême frontière is the name of one of his books containing texts reflective of his life and times, including lyrics of songs he wrote for the music group 1755, which have become classics of the Acadian music repertoire.
